BASIS Knowledge Base Article #01130

Title:

"Why did my license expire?" and other common questions regarding licenses.

Description:

This articles address some of the common questions regarding licenses and when it is required to register for a new license.

Q. Why did my license expire?

A. When you register a serial number and receive a license, the information contained in the license file is unique and encrypted to the specific hardware that it was registered. A temporary license that has an expiration date is sent if the same serial number was registered more then once to different hardware. Please contact the BASIS International Sales department any time the serial number will be registered to a different machine for a license reset. This will allow you register the serial number again and receive a permanent license.

Q. Can I move the existing license to a new machine or different operating system?

A. A license file generated for the hardware and OS of one machine cannot not be moved to another machine. Any time the hardware or operating system changes a license reset is required. Once the serial number is reset, it may be registered again on the new hardware configuration. Failure to reset the license prior to registering will result in a temporary license which will expire in 7 to 10 days. Please contact the BASIS International Sales department any time the serial number will be registered to a different machine for a license reset.

Q. Do I need to register my serial number again if my hostname or ip address change?

No. The hostname is the only value in the license file that may be edited. Modifying any of the other values will result in a corrupted license file. It is important to note that if the hostname or ip address changes it is required for the BASIS License Manager (BLM) to be stopped and restarted. We also rely on hostname resolution to successfully start the BLM so if the network configuration changes you may have problems if the new hostname and ip address cannot successfully be resolved. Q. Where do I find my authorization number?

A. The authorization number is listed on the License Registration Form that is sent from BASIS Customer Service when a new serial number is purchased. Please contact the BASIS Customer Service or Sales department if you are unable to locate this form.

Q. I have purchased additional users and have registered my serial number again, why is it showing the old amount of users?

A. Installing a new license for additional users will not overwrite the old license file. Delete the old license file from the BASIS License Manager (BLM) directory. Once the old license is removed, stop and start the BLM.
